Chapter 10

The huge, seven-foot-tall mutant man snarled as he slowly stood up and reached for his spear. But his hand was barely wrapped around the handle when another spear suddenly came hurtling through the air to hit him square in the chest.

I didn’t have time to look, but I knew that had to have been Sarah.

The blade of the spear sunk in deep, and crimson red blood immediately surrounded the wound as he began to bleed out.

My feet landed on the snow with crunch after crunch as I rushed toward the man with every bit of speed I could possibly muster.

The hostage woman looked up and muttered something under her breath as I rushed by her. But Devonna was next to her in an instant, and I had faith she’d get the hostage woman under control. I couldn’t waste any time. I needed to get to this blond bastard before he woke up the others.

As I ran toward him, I yanked my sword from my hip and readied it for my attack.

The son of a bitch wasn’t giving up the ghost, though. He smiled at me with bloodstained teeth before opening his mouth wide as if he were about to scream his punctured lungs out.

I couldn’t let that happen, so I flung my body forward and grabbed the end of the spear that was still sticking out of his chest.

Then I yanked it free, and blood flooded out of the wound as the wind was pulled from his lungs.

The huge man collapsed onto his knees, but I still saw some fight left in those bright blue eyes, and I wasn’t about to let him use his last breath to wake the others. So I threw the spear to the ground and slid around the giant to come up behind him.

Then I grabbed his bright blond hair with one hand and slit his throat with the other.

Warm blood squirted out of his jugular and onto my arm, but I was more worried about the gurgling noises he was making, so I covered his mouth to silence him as his body crumpled forward.

I guided his huge frame down as best I could, and once his lightly spasming body was laying on the ground, I looked up to the trail to see where my team was.

Devonna was still crouched down next to the captive woman, and while I was surprised they were still there, I reminded myself just how awful of a situation this was for the woman who’d been held hostage. She had to be terrified, and it made sense that she would need a little convincing.

Shanice, Sarah, and Em were all halfway down the hillside already, and I spotted Natasha at the top a second before she started the descent as well.

By the time they reached the bottom, Devonna had convinced the Latin woman to go with her, and the two of them made their way over to the trail.

I picked up the dead man’s spear, as well as the one
